During Dr. Pemberton’s lifetime Coca Cola was sold only for medical purposes. It was originally a cure for morphine and opium addictions among a multitude of other health benefits. In 1887 Asa Griggs Candler bought the Coca Cola formula from Pemberton and other shareholders for $2,300. Candler marketed the product as a soft drink and made millions from his investment. Candler also served as Mayor of Atlanta, Georgia from 1916 to 1919.
